How to Combat Seasonal Affective Disorder

What is SAD?

If shorter days and shifts in weather zap your energy and make you feel blue, you’ve got classic symptoms of a seasonal mood disorder. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of seasonal depression triggered by the change in seasons that occurs primarily in winter. Sometimes we get sad during the winter because of the change in hours, the weather, disruption of your circadian rythym, and change in Hormones during the winter.

Here are some helpful tips to try to combat this during these cold, rainy, and winter months.

1. Use Light from a box to help stimulate your body just 30minutes a day.

2. Use Dawn Simulators for alram clocks. This helps produce a bright sunrise as if you had your curtains open.

3. Talk with you physician.

4. Add Aromatherapy to your home or office.

5. Get up and get moving. Aka: Exercise!

6. Get outside during the day to take in the Sun and Fresh Air and much needed Vitamin D.

7. Stick to a strict schedule.

8. Take a Vacation.

9. Keep A Journal.

10. Be proactive if you start feeling blue.

**In order to put a plan of action in place to manage SAD, you need to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of the disorder. Feeling sad or less energized during the winter months are two signs of SAD. Once you realize you are experiencing SAD, you can seek professional help or take measures to help alleviate symptoms.**
